Calculating the Mean, Median, and Mode

Before you can begin to understand statistics, you need to understand mean, median, and mode. Without these three methods of calculation, it would be impossible to interpret much of the data we use in daily life. Each is used to find the statistical midpoint in a group of numbers, but they all do so differently.   The Mean When people talk about statistical averages, they are referring to the mean. To calculate the mean, simply add all of your numbers together. Next, divide the sum by however many numbers you added. The result is your mean or average score. For example, lets say you have four test scores: 15, 18, 22, and 20. To find the average, you would first add all four scores together, then divide the sum by four. The resulting mean is 18.75. Written out, it looks something like this: (15 18 22 20) / 4 75 / 4 18.75 If you were to round up to the nearest whole number, the average would be 19. The Median The median is the middle value in a data set. To calculate it, place all of your numbers in increasing order. If you have an odd number of integers, the next step is to find the middle number on your list. In this example, the middle or median number is 15: 3, 9, 15, 17, 44 If you have an even number of data points, calculating the median requires another step or two. First, find the two middle integers in your list. Add them together, then divide by two. The result is the median number. In this example, the two middle numbers are 8 and 12: 3, 6, 8, 12, 17, 44 Written out, the calculation would look like this: (8 12) /  2   20 / 2 10 In this instance, the median is 10. The Mode In statistics, the mode in a list of numbers refers to the integers that occur most frequently. Unlike the median and mean, the mode is about the frequency of occurrence. There can be more than one mode or no mode at all; it all depends on the data set itself. For example, lets say you have the following list of numbers: 3, 3, 8, 9, 15, 15, 15, 17, 17, 27, 40, 44, 44 In this case, the mode is 15 because it is the integer that appears most often. However, if there were one fewer 15 in your list, then you would have four modes: 3, 15, 17, and 44. Other Statistical Elements Occasionally in statistics, youll also be asked for the range in a set of numbers. The range is simply the smallest number subtracted from the largest number in your set. For example, lets use the following numbers: 3, 6, 9, 15, 44 To calculate the range, you would subtract 3 from 44, giving you a range of 41. Written out, the equation looks like this:   44 – 3 41 Once youve mastered the basics of mean, median, and mode, you can begin to learn about more statistical concepts. Communications is key to the survival of all relationships. The term used to describe the type of communication that helps maintain relationships is interpersonal. An interpersonal relationship is a relationship between two or more people that have a mutual influence on one another. This paper will discuss two of many interpersonal communication concepts. The two concepts are other-oriented and impersonal communication. Also these concepts will be explained and examples will be given from the movie Good Will Hunting. To start off with, Good Will Hunting is a story about an intelligent young man who struggles with finding his identity. Will the main character is an orphan who was abused as a child, and now as a young adult can’t seem to stay out of trouble. He is able to solve any mathematical problem and memorize everything he reads, but he can’t solve his issues. In the movie Will encounters three people that change his life a professor, a counselor, and a girl. This paper will focus on the relationship he has with the professor and the relationship he has with the counselor. To continue, two interpersonal communication concepts that stood out in the movie were other-oriented and impersonal communication. Other-oriented is to be aware of the other person’s needs, emotions, culture, etc. Impersonal communication is when we treat others as objects or respond to their roles instead of as a unique person. Characterization in â€Å"The Dentist† from The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien Name Course January 19, 2012 Instructor Characterization in â€Å"The Dentist† from The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien In â€Å"The Dentist† from The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien begins by telling a story of a character, Curt Lemon, whom O’Brien was not particularly fond of and whose death was not easy to mourn. O’Brien tells a story of Curt Lemon as to avoid sentimentalism. The setting takes place along the South China Sea, in which the men of the platoon are working in an area of operations called the Rocket Pocket. O’Brien describes Lemon as tense in this moment, at which point Lemon explains to the men of the platoon that his experiences with dentists in the past have not been pleasant and now he refuses to let anyone mess with his teeth. When he is called in to get his teeth checked, he faints. But later he returns and tells the dentist that he has a severe toothache and insists that it be pulled immediately. Although the dentist finds no problems with Curt Lemon’s tooth, he obliges. It is ironic that Curt Lemon is killed at the Rocket Pocket by a grenade that he was playing catch with, just after he is reassured of his bravery by facing his fear and having his tooth pulled. It is ironic because Lemon is severely afraid of something as typically harmless as a checkup by a dentist, yet completely disregards the potential harm of playing catch with a deadly weapon. The tone is that of an introspective story of memory, as shown through this story of his remembrance of Curt Lemon and the Army dentist as well as the way in which he speaks of Lemon’s experiences with dentists in his past. I believe O’Brien chooses this particular story of Curt and the dentist because it is one of general fondness, which is in line with the tone of the story. This story is somewhat humorous and ironic and these are the types of sentimentalisms that typically remain in one’s introspective memory for a lifetime. The general themes in this story appear to portray the weight of one’s emotional as well as physical burdens. There also seems to be a theme of motivation through a fear of shame, as shown by Curt’s fear of the dentist, which he is ashamed of, which then motivates him to prove his bravery. The Dentist† appears to illustrate physical suffering as an easier burden than that of emotional or mental suffering. The greatest enemy of these soldiers was that which was unknown. Curt Lemon gets his tooth pulled in an attempt appear brave to his platoon and perhaps to be acquainted with the feeling of suffering. Through the act of experiencing this pain and becoming acquainted with this suffering, Curt Lemon’s mind is eased of the anticipation and fear of the unknown suffering he might endure in war.
